Spectrum Chart - 181 : Pet Animals

  1. Dog – There are currently around 800 different species of domestic dog worldwide. Dogs are used by Humans for hunting, herding, pulling loads, protection, assisting police, military and more recently, aiding handicapped individuals. This impact on human society has given them the nickname "man's best friend.”
  1. Cat – Cats are common pets worldwide. The average domestic cat sleeps for around 18 hours a day. Cats have excellent night vision and can see at only one-sixth the light level required for human vision.
  1. Cow - In India the cow is seen as a sacred animal. Cows are raised as livestock for meat (beef and veal) & as a dairy animals for milk and other dairy products. Other useful products for which cows are domesticated include leather and dung for manure or fuel.
  1. Sheep – Sheep are medium-sized herbivorous animal. Sheep are mainly farmed for their meat and wool but sheep are also occasionally farmed for their milk. Sheep's wool is the most widely used animal fibre.
  1. Goat – Goats are among the earliest animals domesticated by humans. Goats have been used for their meat, hair, milk and skins. Goats produce about 2% of the world's total annual milk supply.
  1. Rabbit – Rabbits are small mammals that belong to group of animals called Lagomorphs. They can be found on all continents except Antarctica. Rabbits prefer edges of the forests, but they also inhabit deserts, marshes and grasslands. Rabbits are vegetarians, they eat leafy plants and bark. Commercially rabbits are bred for it's meat, fur, wool & for laboratory testing purpose.
  1. Horse – Horses are used by humans for the working activities such as agriculture, transportation, sports events etc. Many products are derived from horses including meat, milk, hide, hair, bones etc. Domestic horses have average lifespan of between 25 to 30 years.
  1. Donkey – Donkey is known as a working animal. After human labour, the donkey is the cheapest form of agricultural power. Donkeys are used to be ridden, used for threshing, raising water, milling and other work.
  1. Camel – Camel is known as a 'Ship of desert.' They are mostly found in deserts & dry regions. Camels have been used by people for transporting goods & people across the desert and also for its milk and meat.
  1. Elephant – Elephants are the largest land-living mammal in the world. Elephants are herbivores and can spend up to 16 hours days collecting leaves, twigs, bamboo and roots. Asian elephant are also kept as pet. Lifespan of Elephants is 55 – 70 years.
  1. Pig – Pigs are omnivores and are highly social and intelligent animals. Pigs are raised commercially for meat generally called pork, hams, gammon or bacon, as well as for leather. Their bristly hairs are also used for brushes.
  1. Yak – Domesticated yaks have been kept primarily for their milk, fibre and meat. Yaks are used to transport goods across mountain passes for local farmers and traders. The average lifespan of a yak is about 20 years.
  1. Parrot – There are roughly 372 species of parrots found in most tropical and subtropical regions. Parrots are intelligent birds. They have relatively large brains, they can learn and they can use simple tools.
  1. Hen – An adult female chicken is called a “hen.” Hen are being the most widely farmed animal today. Hens are kept by humans for their meat and eggs. Some hen breeds can produce upto 300 eggs per year.
  1. Cock – An adult male chicken is called a “rooster/cock.” Roosters are larger & usually more brightly coloured. You can find them on every continent except Antarctica.
  1. Fish – Fish are vertebrates which live in water and respire with gills. There are over 33,000 described species of fish. Goldfish and Siamese Fighting Fish are popular types of pet fish. Koi and ornamental fish are kept in public ponds for their beauty and calming nature.
