Spectrum Chart - 165 : Birds 3

  1. Hawk -Hawk are a large group of birds of prey of the order Falconiformes. There are around 270 species of hawks that can be found on all continents except Antarctica. Hawks are characterised by sharp talons, large, curved bill and muscular legs. Sharp bill is used for biting and tearing the prey. Hawks have excellent eyesight. They can see 8 times better than humans. Lifespan of a hawk is between 13 and 20 years in wild.
  2. Ostrich - Ostrich is a large flightless bird that lives in Africa. They are the largest living bird species and have the biggest eggs of all living birds. Ostriches do not fly, but can run faster than any other bird. Ostriches have long legs and a long neck, but they have a small head. Male ostriches can be 6 - 9 ft tall, while female ostriches are 5.5 - 6.5 ft tall.
  3. Parrot - There are roughly 372 species of parrots in 86 genera and they are found in most tropical and subtropical regions. Parrots have curved beaks, strong legs and clawed feet. They are often brightly coloured. Parrots are believed to be one of the most intelligent bird species. Some parrot species can live for over 80 years.
  4. Dove - Doves belong to the same family, Columbidae as pigeon. Doves are amazing birds. Their capacity to find their way home over hundreds, even thousands of kilometres is unrivalled in the animal kingdom. Doves have an excellent knack for adapting themselves to almost any environment. The only places they are not found are in places of extreme conditions such as deserts and the Antarctic. White dove is a symbol of peace.
  5. Cock - Cock, is a male gallinaceous bird, usually a male chicken. They stand less than 70 cm (27.6 inches) tall and weigh approximately 2.6 kg (5.7 pounds) on average.
  6. Falcon - Falcon is medium-sized bird of prey that belongs to the family of falcons and caracaras. There are 37 species of falcon that can be found all over the world except on the Antarctica. Most species of falcon are dark brown or grey-coloured with white, yellow and black spots and markings on the body. Falcon can reach 9 to 19 inches in height and 1.5 to 2.6 pounds of weight. Falcon has an average lifespan of around 15 years.
  7. Crow - Crows form the genus Corvus in the family Corvidae. They are medium to large sized birds, carnivores and scavengers. Crow is found on all temperate continents except for South America and some islands. Crows are thought to be, with parrots, among the world's most intelligent birds.
  8. Weaver Bird – Weaver bird, are small passerine birds related to the finches. Weaver birds are seed-eating birds with rounded conical bills, most of which are from Sub-Saharan Africa, with fewer species in tropical Asia. They are particularly well-known for their roofed nests. Weaver birds range from about 4 ½ to about 10 inches long. They are omnivorous, and mostly eat insects and seeds.
  9. Sparrow - Sparrow are small passerine birds which belong to the family Passeridae. Sparrows are small birds. They are between 11–18 cms long. They are usually brown and grey. They have short tails and small, strong beaks. Most sparrows eat seeds or small insects. Sparrows are social birds and they live in flocks.
  10. Honey Guide - Honeyguides, also known as honeybirds or indicator birds, belong to the family Indicatoridae. Most honeyguides are dull-coloured, though some have bright yellow colouring in the plumage. They are among the few birds that feed regularly on wax—beeswax. They also feed on waxworms which are the larvae of the wax moth on bee colonies and on flying and crawling insects, spiders and occasional fruits.
  11. Bird of Paradise – The birds of paradise are a group of birds that are found in the tropical rainforests of south east Asia, mainly in the jungles of Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and parts of eastern Australia. There are around 50 different birds of paradise species that range in size from 15 cm to over a meter in height. Many birds of paradise species feed on fruits and berries. Birds of paradise are known to be the most dramatic and attractive birds in the world.
  12. Condor – Condor is a New World vulture, the largest North American land bird. Condor is a uniform black with the exception of triangular patches or bands of white on the underside of the wings. It has grey legs and feet, an ivory-coloured bill, a frill of black feathers near the base of the neck and brownish red eyes.
  13. Duck - Duck is a number of species in the Anatidae family of birds. Ducks are mostly aquatic birds living in both fresh water and sea water and found on every continent except for Antarctica. Ducks are omnivores. They feed on aquatic plants, small fish, insects, worms, grubs and more. All ducks have highly waterproof feathers due to the feathers interlocking nature and waxy coating.
  14. Myna – Myna is a member of the family Sturnidae native to Asia. Myna has brown body, black hooded head and the bare yellow patch behind the eye. The bill and legs are bright yellow. There is a white patch on the outer primaries and the wing lining on the underside is white.
  15. Dodo – Dodo is an extinct flightless bird that was endemic to the island of Mauritius. Dodo is one of the first species known to have died because of humans, Dodos have been extinct since the late 17th century. The dodo was a large bird and weighed about 23 kg. They had grey feathers and yellow feet. Their big hooked bill was a green/yellow colour. It had short wings that were only stubs. They ate fruit, seeds and nuts.
  16. Fly Catcher - Flycatchers are a large family, the Muscicapidae of small passerine birds mostly restricted to the Old World (Europe, Africa and Asia). They are small to medium birds, ranging from 9 to 22 cm in length. Many species are dull brown in colour, but the plumage of some can be much brighter, especially in the males. Most have broad, flattened bills suited to catching insects in flight.
  17. Budgerigar – Budgerigar (nicknamed budgie) is a small parrot. They are small parrots with long flat tails. The budgerigar is found in the drier parts of Australia. It has lived there for over 5 million years. Budgerigars are naturally green and yellow with black, scalloped markings on the nape, back, and wings. Budgerigars are popular pets around the world due to their small size, low cost and ability to mimic human speech.
  18. Bluebird – Bluebirds are a group of medium-sized, mostly insectivorous or omnivorous bird in the order of Passerines. They are mostly found in North America. Bluebirds are territorial and prefer open grassland with scattered trees. Bluebirds can fly at speeds up to 45 miles per hour.
