Chart 157 - Family & Religion

  1. Family Tree – A family tree is a chart showing family relationships in a tree structure form. A family tree "grows" down from the top, from the oldest generations at the top to the newer generations at the bottom.
  2. Large Family – A large family is a group of people who, in most cases, live together. They share their money and food and are supposed to take care of one another. Its members are either genetically related (like brother and sister) or legally bound to each other.
  3. Temple – Temple or Mandir is generally referred to a place where Hindus go to worship God in the form of various deities. Murtis are marble images ceremonially infused with the divine presence of god. They are daily worshipped with aarti and other ceremonies.
  4. Fire Temple – A fire temple in Zoroastrianism is the place of worship for Zoroastrians, often called dar-e mehr (Persian) or agiyari (gujarati). There are around 50 fire temples in Mumbai, 100 in the rest of India and 27 in the rest of the world.
  5. Mosque - A mosque is a place where Muslims worship. Muslims worship, study and discuss Islam and do many other things in a mosque. Many mosques are known for their Islamic architecture.
  6. Gurdwara – Gurdwara is a place of worship in the Sikh religion. In the gurdwara, the Sikh scriptures are recited or sung and sermons are given. Guru Granth Sahib, the holy book is usually placed at one end of the temple, high up under a canopy. All Gurdwaras have a Langar hall, where people can eat free vegetarian food.
  7. Church - Church, is a building used for religious activities, particularly worship services by Christians. Church is often arranged in the shape of a Christian cross. Small churches are called chapels.
  8. Hindu – Hinduism is a religion found most notably in India and Nepal. With over one billion followers, Hinduism is the world's third largest religion by population. Hinduism has been called the "oldest religion" in the world.
  9. Parsee - Parsee is one of two Zoroastrian communities primarily located in India. Parsee's migrated from Greater Iran to Gujarat and Sindh between the 8th and 10th century CE to avoid the persecution of Zoroastrians by Muslim invaders who invaded Iran.
  10. Muslim – Islam is a religion that believes in one God. In Islam, God is called Allah, which is the Arabic word for God. People who follow Islam are called Muslims.
  11. Sikh – Sikhism is a religion that believes in one god. The followers are called "Sikhs", and their holy book is the Guru Granth Sahib. 27 million people are followers of Sikhism, that makes it the fifth largest religion in the world. Sikhs are usually identified by the Turban that they wear. Sikhism was started around 1500 by Guru Nanak Dev.
  12. Christian – A Christian is a person who believes in Christianity, a monotheistic religion. Christianity is mostly about the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. Christians consider the Holy Bible to be a sacred book.
