Spectrum Chart - 402 : Oil Seeds

1. Camellia Seeds - Camellia which originated in China, is notable as an important source of edible oil obtained from its seeds. It is commonly known as the oil-seed camellia. Oil obtained from seed of camellia is edible oil that is used for cooking and seasoning of various dishes. Camellia oil is used to nurture the hair in Japan and to clean the blade of instruments used for cutting.

2. Coconut - Coconut oil is an edible oil extracted from the kernel or meat of mature coconuts harvested from the coconut palm. Coconut oil is commonly used in cooking, especially for frying, and is a common flavor in many South Asian curries. Coconut oil is as effective and safe as mineral oil when used as a moisturiser for mild to moderate xerosis (dry skin) and to reduce protein loss when used in hair.

3. Linseed (Flax) - Linseed oil, also known as flaxseed oil, is a colourless to yellowish oil obtained from the dried, ripened seeds of the flax plant. Linseed oil is a common carrier used in oil paint. It can also be used as a painting medium, making oil paints more fluid, transparent and glossy. Linseed oil is an edible oil in demand as a nutritional supplement, as a source of α-Linolenic acid. It is traditionally eaten with potatoes and quark. It is regarded as a delicacy due to its hearty taste, that enhances the flavour of quark.

4. Cotton Seeds - Cottonseed oil is a cooking oil extracted from the seeds of cotton plants of various species. Cotton seed has a similar structure to other oil seeds such as sunflower seed, having an oil-bearing kernel surrounded by a hard outer hull, the oil is extracted from the kernel. Cottonseed oil is used for salad oil, mayonnaise, salad dressing and similar products because of its flavor stability.

5. Castor Beans - Castor oil is a vegetable oil obtained by pressing the seeds of the castor oil plant. Castor oil is a colourless to very pale yellow liquid with a distinct taste and odour once first ingested.

6. Jatropha Seeds - Jatropha seeds are an oil crop for biodiesel production. The oil from Jatropha seeds is mainly converted into biodiesel for use in diesel engines. The cake can be used for fish or animal feed (if detoxified), biomass feedstock to power electricity plants, or as biogas or high-quality organic fertilizer.

7. Poppy Seeds - Poppy seed is an oilseed obtained from the opium poppy. The seeds are used, whole or ground, as an ingredient in many foods, and they are pressed to yield poppyseed oil. The oil has culinary and pharmaceutical uses, as well as long established uses in the making of paints, varnishes and soaps.

8. Mustard Seeds - Mustard seeds have been highly prized culinary oil-seeds being in use since earlier times. The seeds are high in essential oils as well as plant sterols. Mustard seeds and its oil has traditionally been used to relieve muscle pain, rheumatism and arthritic pain.

9. Canola Seeds (Rapeseed) - Canola oil is the main product of canola seed since about 43 percent of the seed is oil. Canola oil is the lowest in saturated fats of all commonly used oils. Rapeseed oil is also used as diesel fuel, either as biodiesel, straight in heated fuel systems or blended with petroleum distillates for powering motor vehicles. Biodiesel may be used in pure form in newer engines without engine damage and is frequently combined with fossil-fuel diesel in ratios varying from 2% to 20% biodiesel.
