  1. Raigad Fort (Maharashta) – Raigad is a hill fort situated in the Mahad, Raigad district of Maharashtra. The Maratha king, Shivaji Maharaj built this fort and made his capital in 1674 when he was crowned King of a Maratha Kingdom. The fort rises 820 metres above sea level, is located in the Sahyadri mountain range. The fort was built by Chandrarao More in 1030.
  2. Pratapgadh Fort (Maharashtra) – Pratapgadh Fort is a large fort located in Satara district, Maharashtra. Significant as the site of the Battle of Pratapgadh. Fort was built by Shivaji Maharaj. It was completed in 1656. The Battle of Pratapgarh between Shivaji and Afzal Khan was the first major test of the fledgling kingdom's army and set the stage of the establishment of the Maratha empire.
  3. Daulatabad Fort (Maharashta) - Daulatabad fort was one of the most powerful forts during the medieval period. Built on a 200 metre high conical hill, the fort was defended by moat and glacis running around the hill at its foot besides the most complex and intricate defence system. The fortifications comprise three encircling walls with bastions.
  4. Arnala Fort (Maharashta) - Arnala Fort is built on a small island of the port town of Arnala, located around 8 miles north of Vasai, Maharashtra. In 1516, a local chieftain in Gujarat, Sultan Mahmud Begda constructed the fort on the island, strategically located at the mouth of the Vaitarna river.
  5. Diu Fort (Diu) - Diu Fort, is located on the west coast of India in Diu was built by the Portuguese during their colonial rule of the Diu island. The fort was built in 1535 subsequent to a defence alliance forged by Bahadur Shah, the Sultan of Gujarat and the Portuguese when Humayun, the Mughal Emperor waged war to annex this territory.
  6. Bidar Fort (Karnataka) - Bidar Fort is situated in Bidar city of the northern plateau of Karnataka. Sultan Alla-Ud-Din Bahman of the Bahmanid Dynasty shifted his capital from Gulbarga to Bidar in 1427 and built his fort along with a number of Islamic monuments. There are over 30 monuments inside Bidar fort. One of the most unusual features of Bidar fort is the historic water supply system, called karez, which is a water harnessing technology that originated in Persia.
  7. Golkonda Fort (Telangana) - Golkonda Fort in Southern India and was the capital of the medieval sultanate of the Qutb Shahi dynasty. Golkonda Fort was first built by the Kakatiya dynasty as part of their western defences. The whole of the Golkonda Fort complex and its surrounding spreads across 11 km of total area. A visit to the fort reveals the architectural beauty in many of the pavilions, gates, entrances and domes.
  8. Gingee Fort (Tamil Nadu) - Gingee Fort is one of the surviving forts in Tamil Nadu. It lies in Villupuram District. The Gingee Fort complex is on three hillocks, Krishnagiri to the north, Rajagiri to the west and Chandrayandurg to the southeast. The three hills together constitute a fort complex. Small fort was built by the Chola dynasty during the 9th century AD, Gingee Fort was modified by Kurumbar during the 13th century.
  9. Vellore Fort (Tamil Nadu) - Vellore Fort is a large 16th-century fort situated in heart of the Vellore city, in the state of Tamil Nadu built by Vijayanagara kings. The fort was at one time the headquarters of the Aravidu Dynasty of the Vijayanagara Empire. The fort is known for its grand ramparts, wide moat and robust masonry.
  10. Vattakottai Fort (Tamil Nadu) - Vattakottai Fort is a seaside fort near Kanyakumari the southern tip of India. It was built in the 18th century as a coastal defence-fortification and barracks in the erstwhile Travancore kingdom. The fort is made of granite blocks and a part of the fort extends into the sea. Vattakottai Fort commands a picturesque view of both the sea on the one side and the hills (Western Ghats) on the other.
  11. Kannur Fort (Kerala) - Kannur Fort is a fort facing the Arabian Sea situated 3 km from Kannur, a city in Kerala. It was built in 1505 by Dom Francisco de Almeida, the first Portuguese Viceroy of India. The Dutch captured the fort from the Portuguese in 1663. In 1790 the British seized the fort and used it as their chief military station in Malabar until 1947.
  12. Bekal Fort (Kerala) - Bekal Fort is the largest fort in Kerala, situated at Kasaragod district, spreading over 40 acres. Fort appears to have been built up from the sea since almost three fourths of its exterior is drenched and the waves continually stroke the citadel. Shivappa Nayaka of Bednore constructed the Bekal Fort in 1650.
