1. Pratapgarh Fort (Satara) - Pratapgarh Fort is a large fort located in Satara district, Maharashtra. Significant as the site of the Battle of Pratapgarh. Fort was built by Shivaji Maharaj. It was completed in 1656. The Battle of Pratapgarh between Shivaji and Afzal Khan was the first major test of the fledgling kingdom's army and set the stage of the establishment of the Maratha empire.
2. Sindhudurg Fort (Sindhudurg) - Sindhudurg Fort is a fort that occupies an islet in the Arabian Sea, on the shores of Malvan town of Sindhudurg District in the Konkan region. This fort was constructed by Shivaji Maharaj, built over a period of three years (1664–67), the sea fort is spread over 48 acres with a two-mile long rampart and walls that are 30 feet high and 12 feet thick.
3. Ahmednagar Fort (Ahmednagar) - Ahmednagar Fort is located in the heart of the city of Ahmednagar. It was the headquarters of the Ahmednagar Sultanate. The fort was built by Malik Ahmad Nizam Shah I in 1427. The fort was used by the British Raj as a prison and this was where Jawaharlal Nehru, Abul Kalam Azad, Sardar Patel and other freedom fighters were detained for almost three years after they passed the Quit India Resolution.
4. Kolaba Fort, Alibaug (Raigad) - Kolaba Fort is an old military fortification in India. It is situated in the sea at a distance of 1–2 km from the shores of Alibaug, in the Konkan region. Kolaba fort was chosen by Shivaji to be fortified after the whole of South Konkan became free. In 1662, he strengthened and fortified Kolaba fort to make it one of his chief naval stations.
5. Ajinkyatara Fort (Kolhapur) – Ajinkyatara is a fort on one of the seven mountains surrounding the city of Satara in the Sahayadri Mountains. The fort is located at Ajinkyatara Mountain, which is 3,300 feet high. The Ajinkyatara fort is a major historic place of Maharashtra and was very vital as one could keep watch over the entire South Maharashtra.
6. Rajgarh Fort (Pune) – Rajgarh is one of the forts in the Pune district. The fort is around 1,400 metres above sea level. It was capital of the Maratha Empire during the rule of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj for almost 26 years, after which he moved the capital to Raigad Fort.
7. Shivneri Fort (Pune) - Shivneri Fort is a 17th-century military fortification located near Junnar in Pune district. It is the birthplace of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of Maratha Empire. Shivneri is a hill fort having a triangular shape and has its entrance from the South-west side of the hill. The fort extends up to 1.6 km with seven spiral well defended gates. There are mud walls all around the fort. Inside the fort, the major buildings are the prayer hall, a tomb and a mosque.
8. Lohagad Fort (Pune) – Lohagad is one of the many hill forts of Maharashtra. Lohagad fort has a long history with several dynasties occupying it at different periods of time from Satavahanas, Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Yadavas, Bahamanis, Nizams, Mughals and Marathas. Shivaji Maharaj captured it in 1648 and used it for keeping his treasury.
9. Ramshej Fort (Nashik) - Ramshej Fort is a small fort located 10 km north-west of Nashik, in the state of Maharashtra. Ramsej fort saw the war against Mughal Empire for six and a half years. Mughals conquered Ramshej Fort by paying bribe to the killedar.
10. Sinhagad Fort (Pune) - Sinhagad Fort has been the site of many important battles, most notably the Battle of Sinhagad in 1671. It was also strategically located at the centre of a string of other forts such as Rajgad, Purandar and Torna.
11. Suvarnadurg Fort (Ratnagiri) - Suvarnadurg fort is located on a rocky island in the Arabian Sea on the west coast. It is spread over an area of 8 acres and is about 1 mile from the main land. The fort was captured by Chatrapati Shivaji in 1660 by defeating Ali Adil Shah II.
12. Vasai Fort (Thane) - Vasai Fort as known as Fort Bassein is a large fort in Vasai on the outskirts of Mumbai. Fort was built by Bahadur Shah, Sultan of Gujarat, it was initially one of a chain of forts intended to guard the coast against the Portuguese and the pirates. The fort also played a strategic role in the First Anglo-Maratha War. Currently the Vasai fort is a monument of national importance and is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India.
