1. Mula Dam, Ahmednagar - Mula Dam
is an earthfill and gravity dam on Mula river near Rahuri in
Ahmednagar district. The height of the dam above lowest foundation is
48.17 m, while the length is 2,856 m. The volume content is 7,594 km3
and gross storage capacity is 736,320.00 km3. Water
capacity is 26 TMC.
2. Koyna Dam, Satara – The Koyna
Dam is one of the largest dams in Maharashtra. It is a
rubble-concrete dam constructed on Koyna River. It is located in
Koyna Nagar, Satara district, nestled in the Western Ghats on the
state highway between Chiplun and Karad. The main purpose of the dam
is hydroelectricity with some irrigation in neighboring areas. Today
the Koyna Hydroelectric Project is the largest completed
hydroelectric power plant in India having a total installed capacity
of 1,920 MW. Due to its electricity generating potential Koyna river
is considered as the 'life line of Maharashtra'.
3. Jayakwadi Dam, Aurangabad –
Jayakwadi Dam is one of the largest earthern dams in Asia. It is
located on Godavari river at the site of Jayakwadi village in Paithan
taluka of Aurangabad district in Maharashtra. The water is mainly
used to irrigate agricultural land in the drought-prone Marathwada
region of the state. It also provides water for drinking and
industrial usage to nearby towns and villages and to the
municipalities and industrial areas of Aurangabad and Jalna district.
The surrounding area of the dam has a garden and a bird sanctuary.
4. Ujani Dam, Solapur - The Ujjani
Dam commissioned in June 1980 is an earth cum concrete masonry dam,
which has created a multipurpose reservoir. It is located near Ujjani
village of Madha taluka in Solapur district of the state of
Maharashtra on the Bhima river. The Ujjani Dam and its large
reservoir provide multi-purpose benefits of irrigation, hydroelectric
power generation, drinking and industrial water supply and fisheries.
The total length of the dam is 2,534 m.
5. Mulshi Dam, Pune – Mulshi Dam
is a major dam on the Mula river in India. It is located in the
Mulshi taluka of the Pune district of Maharashtra State. Water from
the dam is used for irrigation as well as for producing electricity
at the Bhira hydroelectric power plant, operated by Tata Power. In
recent years Mulshi and adjoining areas have been developed as a
tourist destination.
6. Darna Dam, Nashik - Darna Dam,
is a gravity dam on Darna river near Igatpuri, Nashik district in the
state of Maharashtra. The height of the dam above lowest foundation
is 28 m while the length is 1,634 m. The volume content is 1,886.1
km3 and gross storage capacity is 226,870.00 km3.
Its main purpose is for irrigation and also drinking water supply to
nearby town of Sinnar, Nashik etc.
7. Panshet Dam, Pune - Panshet Dam,
also called Tanajisagar Dam, is a dam on the Ambi river about 50 km
southwest of the city of Pune in western India. The dam was
constructed in late 1950s for irrigation. It supplies drinking water
to Pune. The height of the dam above its lowest foundation is 63.56
m, while the length is 1,039 m. The volume content is 4,190 km3
and gross storage capacity is 303,000 m3. Panshet is one
of the famous picnic spots of Pune and attracts many visitors from
Mumbai.
8. Wilson Dam, Ahmednagar –
Wilson Dam, built in 1910 across River Pravara in Bhandardhara in
Ahmednagar district in Maharashtra. Is situated at a height of 150 m
above sea level. It’s one of the oldest dams in the country. The
opening of sluice gates creates two 60 to 80 feet cascades of water
that plummet to the rocks below.
9. Pawna Dam, Pune - Pawna Dam is a
gravity dam that has been used for generating electricity and
supplying water for irrigation. The dam is constructed as a simple
embankment and makes use of its own weight to resists the force that
is imposed by the water. Pawna Dam is 139 ft. high and is 4360 ft.
long. The area is being developed into a tourist spot.
10. Gangapur Dam, Nashik - Gangapur
Dam, is an earthfill dam on Godavari river near Nashik in the state
of Maharashtra. The height of the dam above lowest foundation is
36.59 m, while the length is 3,902 m. The volume content is 4,612 km3
and gross storage capacity is 215,880.00 km3. Due to silt
deposition in the reservoir area, the storage capacity of the dam has
gradually reduced. The right side canal running towards Nashik is
also closed due to the high civilization in the area.
11. Waghur Dam, Jalgaon - Waghur Dam
is an earthfill dam located on the Waghur River near Nandgaon, in
Jalgaon district in Mahrashtra. The height of the dam is 13.6 m while
the length is 690 m. It has a gross storage capacity of 50 TMC. The
volume is 70 km3 and gross storage capacity is 1,220.00
km3. The dam's main purpose is to supply water to Jalgaon
city. Canals were built along the left and right banks of the river
to meet irrigation needs.
