1. Thiruvalluvar – Thiruvalluvar is a
celebrated Tamil poet and philosopher whose contribution to Tamil
literature is the Thirukkural, a work on ethics. Thiruvalluvar was
the greatest Tamil scholar. This estimate is based on linguistic
analysis of his writings, as there is no archaeological evidence for
when he lived.
2. Kambar – Kambar was a medieval Tamil
poet and the author of the Ramavataram, popularly known as
Kambaramayanam, the Tamil version ofRamayana. Kambar also authored
other literary works in Tamil, such as 'Thirukkai Vazakkam',
Erezhupathu, Silaiezhupathu, Kangai Puranam, sadagopar anthathi and
Sarasvati Anthati.
3. Ilango Adigal - Ilango Adigal was a
Tamil poet and a Jain monk, who was instrumental in the creation of
Silappathikaram, one of the five great epics of Tamil Literature.
4. Avvaiyar - Avvaiyars was the title of
more than one poet who was active during different periods of Tamil
literature. The Avvaiyar were some of the most famous and important
female poets of the Tamil canon. There were three female poets titled
Avvaiyar.
5. Vaali – Vaali was an Indian poet and
lyricist whose works were in Tamil, had a five-decade long association
with the Tamil film industry, wrote over 15,000 songs. He was
honoured by the Government of India with the Padma Shri, India's
fourth highest civilian honour in 2007.
6. Kannadasan - Kannadasan was a Tamil
poet and lyricist, heralded as one of the greatest and most important
writers in the Tamil language. Frequently called Kaviarasu (King of
Poets), Kannadasan was most familiar for his song lyrics in Tamil
films and contributed around 5000 lyrics apart from 6000 poems.
7. V. Kalyanasundaram – T. V.
Kalyanasundaram was a Tamil scholar, essayist and activist. He is
esteemed for the strong humanism of his essays, the analytical depth
of his commentaries on classical Tamil literature and philosophy and
the clear, fluid style of his prose.
8. Mu. Varadaranjan – Mu. Varadaranjan
was a Tamil scholar, author and academic from Tamil Nadu, India. He
was a prolific writer whose published works include 13 novels, 6
plays, 2 short story collections, 11 essay anthologies, a book on the
history of Tamil literature, books on Tamil linguistics and
children's books.
9. U. V. Swaminatha Iyer - U. V.
Swaminatha Iyer was a Tamil scholar and researcher who was
instrumental in bringing many long-forgotten works of classical Tamil
literature to light.
10. Vairamuthu - Vairamuthu is a Tamil poet
and lyricist.
11. Subramanya Bharathi - Subramania
Bharathi was an Indian writer, poet, journalist,Indian independence
activist and social reformer from Tamil Nadu. Songs penned by
Bharathi are widely used in Tamil films and music concerts.
12. PA. Vijay - PA. Vijay is a Tamil
language poet and lyricist who writes song lyrics for films.
13. Bharathidasan - Bharathidasan was a
20th-century Tamil poet and rationalist whose literary works handled
mostly socio-political issues. His writings served as a catalyst for
the growth of the Dravidian movement in Tamil Nadu. The Government of
Puducherryunion territory has adopted the song of invocation to
Goddess Tamil written by Bharathidasan as the state song of
Puducherry.
