1. Rabindranath Tagore - Rabindranath
Tagore is regarded as one of the greatest poet, novelist and
educator, he won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913. Tagore
started to compose poems at the age of eight. His first book, a
collection of poems, appeared when he was 17. Tagore’s reputation
as a writer was established in the United States and in England after
the publication of Gitanjali, Song Offerings, in which Tagore tried
to find inner calm and explored the themes of divine and human love.
The poems were translated into English by Tagore himself.
2. Atal Bihari Vajpayee - Atal Bihari
Vajpayee is the former Prime Minister of India, a Hindi poet and an
orator known for his spellbinding eloquence. Vajpayee's poetry is
marked by nationalistic fervour and human values. His poems are
inspired by Hindu mythology and his poems are rich in religious
symbolism. Simple in language and imagery, his poems extol the
heritage, history and destiny of India.
3. Sarojini Naidu - Sarojini Naidu was an
Indian independence activist and poet. She began writing at the age
of twelve. In 1905, her first collection of poems, named "The
Golden Threshold" was published. After that, she published two
other collections of poems–"The Bird of Time" and "The
Broken Wings". Mahashree Arvind, Rabindranath Tagore and
Jawaharlal Nehru were among the thousands of admirers of her work.
Her poems had English words, but an Indian soul.
4. Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay - Bankim
Chandra Chattopadhyay was a Bengali writer, poet and journalist. He
was the composer of India's national song Vande Mataram.
5. Sumitranandan Pant - Sumitranandan Pant
was an Indian poet. He was one of the most celebrated "Progressive"
left-wing 20th century poets of the Hindi language and was known for
romanticism in his poems which were inspired by nature, people and
beauty within. He is considered one of the major poets of the
Chhayavaadi school of Hindi literature.
6. Harivansh Rai Bachchan - Harivansh Rai
Bachchan was a noted Indian poet of the Nayi Kavita literary movement
of early 20th century Hindi literature. He was also a famous poet of
the Hindi Kavi Sammelan. He is best known for his early work
Madhushala. In 1976, he was honoured with the Padma Bhushan for his
immense contribution to Hindi literature.
7. Gulzar - Gulzar, is an Indian poet,
lyricist and film director. Gulzar primarily writes poems in Urdu and
Punjabi besides several dialects of Hindi such as Braj Bhasha,
Khariboli, Haryanvi and Marwari. His poetry is in Triveni type of
stanza. He was awarded Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian
award in India, the Sahitya Akademi Award and the Dadasaheb Phalke
Award.
8. Ashok Chakradhar - Ashok Chakradhar is
a Hindi author and poet. He specializes in satire and comedy. He also
recites his poetry at Kavi sammelan-style, poetry gatherings. He has
represented all classes of society in his poetry. He was awarded the
Padma Shri by Government of India in 2014.
9. Kaifi Azmi - Kaifi Azmi was an Indian
Urdu poet. Like most of the Urdu poets, Azmi began as a ghazal
writer, cramming his poetry with the repeated themes of love and
romance in a style that was replete with clichés and metaphors. His
best known poems are Aurat, Makaan, Daaera, Saanp and Bahuroopni. He
was the recipient of Padma Shri award.
10. Gopal Das Neeraj - Gopaldas Neeraj is a
poet and author of Hindi literature. He is also a famous poet of
english Kavi Sammelan. He wrote under the pen name "Neeraj".
His style is considered easy to understand, but has also been
compared with high quality Hindi literature. He was awarded Padma
Shri in 1991 and Padma Bhushan in 2007.
11. Ashok Vajpeyi - Ashok Vajpeyi is a
noted Hindi poet, critic, essayist and translator, and a dynamic
presence in the Indian cultural scene. He is the author of
thirty-eight books of poetry. He is the recipient of the Sahitya
Akademi Award (1994) for his book Kahin Nahin Vahin. His poems have
been translated into several Indian & international languages.
12. G. Sankara Kurup - G. Sankara Kurup,
better known as Mahakavi G, was the first winner of the Jnanpith
Award, India's highest literary award. He won the prize in 1965 for
his collection of poems in Malayalam Odakkuzhal. Mahakavi G was one
of the foremost among the Malayalam poets. Kurup published his first
poem, called Salutation to Nature in 1918, while still a student.
Apart from 25 collections of poetry, Kurup also wrote verse dramas
and collections of literary essays.
13. Mirza Ghalib - Mirza Ghalib is the last
great poet of the Mughal Era, he is considered to be one of the most
popular and influential poets of the Urdu language. Today Ghalib
remains popular not only in India and Pakistan but also among the
Hindustani diaspora around the world. Ghalib started composing poetry
at the age of 11. Ghalib was a visionary, a poet of humanism whose
works are popular even after three centuries.
