1. Pandit Ravi Shankar (Sitar) - Pandit
Ravi Shankar was a known Indian musician and a composer of Hindustani
classical music. He was one of the best-known exponents of the sitar
in the second half of the 20th century and influenced many other
musicians throughout the world. Shankar developed a style distinct
from that of his contemporaries and incorporated influences from
rhythm practices of Carnatic music. Shankar has been considered one
of the top sitar players of the second half of the 20th century. He
was awarded with the highest Indian civilian award 'Bharat Ratna' in
1999.
2. Ustad Bismillah Khan (Shenai) -
Bismillah Khan often referred to by the honorific title Ustad, was an
Indian musician credited with popularising the shehnai, a
subcontinental wind instrument of the oboe class. While the shehnai
had long held importance as a folk instrument played primarily during
traditional ceremonies, Khan is credited with elevating its status
and bringing it to the concert stage. He was awarded India's highest
civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, in 2001.
3. Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia (Bansuri) –
Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia is an Indian classical flutist. Apart
from classical music, he has made a mark as a music director for
Indian films along with Shivkumar Sharma, forming a group called
Shiv-Hari. He has collaborated with world musicians in experimental
cross-cultural performances, including the fusion group Shakti. He
was awarded Padma Vibhushan, second highest civilian award by Indian
Government in 2000.
4. Gangubai Hangal (Vocal) - Gangubai
Hangal was an Indian singer of the khyal genre of Hindustani
classical music, who was known for her deep and powerful voice.
Hangal belonged to the Kirana gharana. Gangubai Hangal received a
number of awards, which include Padma Bhushan in 1971, Sangeet Natak
Akademi Award in 1973, Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship in 1996,
Padma Vibhushan in 2002.
5. Pandit Ram Narayan (Sarangi) - Pandit
Ram Narayan is an Indian musician who popularised the bowed
instrument sarangi as a solo concert instrument in Hindustani
classical music and became the first internationally successful
sarangi player. Narayan is associated with the Kirana gharana
through Abdul Wahid Khan, but his performance style is not strongly
connected to it. Narayan received the national awards Padma Shri in
1976, Padma Bhushan in 1991 and Padma Vibhushan in 2005.
6. Pandit Jasraj (Vocal) – Pandit Jasraj
is an Indian classical vocalist. He belongs to the Mewati gharana of
Hindustani classical music. Jasraj's vocal range extends
three-and-a-half octaves and uses precise diction, a trademark of the
Mewati gharana's style of khayal. He has also done extensive research
in Haveli Sangeet to create numerous innovative bandish
(composition).
7. Pandit Kishan Maharaj (Tabla) - Pandit
Kishan Maharaj was an Indian tabla player who belonged to the Benares
gharana of Hindustani classical music. Maharaj had the ability to
play cross-rhythms and produce complex calculations, particularly in
tihai patterns. Known as an excellent accompanist, Maharaj was
extremely versatile and capable of playing with any accompaniment, be
it with the Sitar, Sarod, Dhrupad, Dhamar or even dance. Kishan
Maharaj won the Padma Shri in 1973 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2002.
8. Ustad Zakir Hussain (Tabla) - Zakir
Hussain is an Indian tabla player, musical producer, film actor and
composer. Hussain is a founding member of Bill Laswell's 'World Music
Supergroup' Tabla Beat Science. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1988
and the Padma Bhushan in 2002, by the Government of India. In 1999,
he was awarded the United States National Endowment for the Arts's
National Heritage Fellowship, the highest award given to traditional
artists and musicians.
9. Pandit Chhannulal Mishra (Vocal) –
Pandit Chhannulal Mishra is a Hindustani classical singer from
Banaras, a noted exponent of the Kirana gharana of the Hindustani
classical music and especially the Khayal and the 'Purab Ang' –
Thumri. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India's third highest
civilian honour in 2010.
10. Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt (Mohan Veena)
- Vishwa Mohan Bhatt is a Hindustani classical music instrumentalist
who plays the Mohan Veena (slide guitar). Bhatt is best known for his
Grammy award winning album A Meeting by the River with Ry Cooder
released on Water Lily Acoustics label. He is also known for other
fusion and pan-cultural collaborations with Western artists such as
Taj Mahal, Béla Fleck and Jerry Douglas. He was awarded Padma Shri
in 2002.
11. Girija Devi (Vocal) - Girija Devi is an
Indian classical singer of the Seniya and Banaras gharanas. She
performs classical and light classical music and has helped elevate
the profile of thumri. Her repertoire includes the semi-classical
genres kajri, chaiti and holi and she sings khyal, Indian folk music
and tappa. Devi is considered as"Queen Of Thumri". She was
awarded the Padma Shri in 1972, the Padma Bhushan in 1989 and the
Padma Vibhushan in 2016, received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in
1977 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship in 2010.
12. T. V. Gopalakrishnan (Vocal) -
Tripunithura Viswanathan Gopalakrishnan is a Carnatic and Hindustani
musician from Chennai. He is one of the rare musicians who is equally
proficient in both Carnatic and Hindustani Vocal, mrdangam and
violin. He is hailed as an innovator of Indian Jazz. Gopalakrishnan
was given the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1990. He has been
awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in the year
2012.
13. Mallikarjun Mansur (Vocal) -
Mallikarjun Mansur was an Indian classical singer of the khyal style
in the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana of Hindustani classical music. Mansur
was well known for his command over a large number of rare
(aprachalit) ragas such as Shuddh Nat, Asa Jogiya, Hem Nat,
Lachchhasakh, Khat, Shivmat Bhairav, Bihari, Sampoorna Malkauns,
Lajawanti, Adambari Kedar and Bahaduri Todi, as well as his constant,
mercurial improvisations in both melody and metre without ever losing
the emotional content of the song.
14. M. S. Subbulakshmi (Vocal) - Madurai
Shanmukhavadivu Subbulakshmi was a Carnatic vocalist. M. S.
Subbulakshmi as the leading exponent of classical and semi-classical
songs in the carnatic tradition of South India. She is the first
Indian musician to receive the Ramon Magsaysay award, often
considered Asia's Nobel Prize, in 1974. She was the first musician
ever to be awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour
in 1998.
15. Dr. N. Rajam (Violin) - N. Rajam is an
Indian violinist who performs Hindustani classical music. People
often refer to her music as the "Singing Violin". Rajam was
a Professor of Music at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in the Faculty
of Performing Arts for nearly 40 years. She has been the Chair of the
department and the Dean of the college at BHU. She was awarded the
2012 Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship, the highest honour in the
performing arts conferred by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, India's
National Academy for Music, Dance and Drama. She also received the
prestigious titles of Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan.
