1. Chess – Chess is a board game for two
players. It is played on a square board, made of 64 smaller squares,
with eight squares on each side. Each player starts with sixteen
pieces: eight pawns, two knights, two bishops, two rooks, one queen
and one king. Chess is believed to have originated in Eastern India
in 6th century AD.
2. Gilli Danda – Gilli-Danda is an
amateur sport played in the rural areas and small towns all over
India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Afghanistan and Pakistan. The game is
played with two sticks: a large one called a danda, which is used to
hit a smaller one, the gilli. Gilli Danda is an ancient sport of
India, possibly with origins over 2500 years ago. It is believed to
be the origin of Western games such as cricket & baseball.
3. Langdi – Langdi is a traditional
Indian field sport, similar to hopscotch. Langdi in Maharashtra is a
popular childhood pastime. Langdi is a team sport between two sides,
played 12 players a side, and an additional three extra players. A
match lasts 36 minutes. It is played in four innings of nine minutes
each.
4. Kalaripayattu - Kalaripayattu is
considered to be one of the oldest fighting systems in existence. It
is now practised in Kerala, in contiguous parts of Tamil Nadu and
Delhi. It was originally practised in northern and central parts of
Kerala and the Tulunadu region of Karnataka. Kalaripayattu techniques
are a combination of steps and postures. Each stance has its own
style, power combination, function and effectiveness. These
techniques vary from one style to another.
5. Hockey – Hockey is a team sports
which can be played on a grass field or a turf field as well as an
indoor board surface. Each team plays with eleven players including
the goalie. Players use sticks made out of wood, carbon fibre,
fibre glass etc to hit a round, hard, rubber like ball. It is an
Olympic sports. India has won the maximum 8 gold medal in Olympic
games.
6. Kho Kho - Kho kho is a tag sport from
the Indian subcontinent. It is played by teams of twelve players, of
which nine enter the field, who try to avoid being touched by members
of the opposing team. A match consists of two innings with each
inning consisting of chasing and running turns of 9 minutes each. One
team sits/kneels in the middle of the court, in a row, with adjacent
members facing opposite directions. The runners take to the field, 3
at a time and the team that takes the shortest time to tag/tap all
the opponents in the field, wins.
7. Chaupat (Pachisi) – Chaupat or
Pachisi is a cross and circle board game that originated in ancient
India. It is played on a board shaped like a symmetrical cross. A
player's pieces move around the board based upon a throw of six or
seven cowrie shells, with the number of shells resting with aperture
upwards indicating the number of spaces to move. It is a game for
two, three or four players, four usually play in two teams. One team
has yellow and black pieces, the other team has red and green. The
team which moves all its pieces to the finish first, wins the game.
8. Skipping Rope – A skipping rope or
jump rope is a tool used in the activity of skipping played by
children and many young adults, where one or more participants jump
over a rope swung so that it passes under their feet and over their
heads. There are few variations of the activity. The most basic
involves a single participant turning and jumping the rope. A long
rope involves a minimum of three participants, two of whom turn the
rope while one or more jump.
